Barbara A. Gibson, 74, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Hand officiating. Kurt Wilmot will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Whitley Cemetery in Irwin County. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.

Mrs. Gibson was born July 30, 1939, in Oneida, Kentucky, to the late Holt and Lillie Byrd Combs. She was a graduate of Versailles High School in Indiana. She was a former seamstress for Champion Sportswear and Irwin Manufacturing. She moved to the community in 1985 from Macon County. Mrs. Gibson was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She was known, as "Mawmaw" and she loved her church and family.


She is survived by her children: Brett Vickers of Middleton, Ohio, Marcy & Kevin Day of Fitzgerald, Carla Gibson of Fitzgerald, Darla & Charlie Biggers of Ocilla, Shannon and Reese Starnes of Fitzgerald and William & Julie Stevens of Fitzgerald; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Ernest B. "Sam" Gibson; a son: Russell Scott Vickers and ten brothers and sisters.
