"Charlie" Brown was born in Rock Creek Township, Wells County, Indiana, to Thomas Brown and Lydia Sparks, both originally from Wilkes County, North Carolina who settled in Rock Creek Township in 1836. He was the second youngest of their 10 children.

He married Mary Jane Rinker May 18, 1882, in Huntington County, Indiana, and lived his later years in Union Township.

"Charles Brown, 65, died Sun. afternoon at 3:50 o'clock at his home in Union Twp. 2 miles east of Mardenis. He had been ill 2 years and seriously ill several months. Death was caused by heart trouble. Surviving are the widow, 4 sons, Clifford Brown of Oklahoma, Frank Brown of Keystone, Garl Brown of Michigan and Ross Brown, at home; & 2 daughters, Mrs. George Wygant of Roanoke and Mrs. Joseph Stanley of Van Buren. There are 12 grandchildren, 2 brothers and 1 sister. Mr. Brown was a member of the Evangelical Church at Mt. Zion. Funeral services will be held Wed. afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Mt. Zion with the Rev. Heil of Bippus in charge. Burial will be at Union."
