Bertha was born in Wilson Township to Frederick & Augusta (Thiem) Kowalski. She married John Gindt on September 17, 1901, to this union are eight known children. John died in 1920 at the age of 47. Bertha went on to marry Peter Swallow who was a widower with three children. They had four children together Robert, Gladys, Jane & Richard Swallow.
