Emma's birth name was Amelia E Dudley. Some have indicated that her middle name was Emmeline. What is certain is that the 1850 and 1870 U. S. Census records, her marriage record, and the birth record of her daughter Frances (b.1869) all record her as Amelia. All records subsequent to the 1870 census record her name as Emma.

It is interesting to note that Emma's marriage was performed by her father, Rev. Cyrus Dudley. The original handwritten record can be viewed at:
