Speck was born on October 30, 1923 at Breda, Iowa, to Anton and Helena (Neppl) Bachman. He received his first 8 years of education in a country school and in the spring of 1937 he went one year to high school. After that he helped his dad on the farm until he was drafted into the Army in 1944. Speck and his 5 brothers all served their country in the military during WWII and the Korean Conflict.
Speck met his future wife, Helen Kelly in 1942 and they were married on September 24, 1945 after the war was over. In 1953, Speck and Helen had a daughter, Bonnie and later a son, Joe.
Speck was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Auburn, and was also a 68 year member of the American Legion. He was a good, but careful, provider for his family.
Speck is survived by his wife Helen of Auburn, daughter Bonnie (Paul) Hasenwinkel of Auburn, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are his brothers Ott, Ed, Duane and Jim Bachman. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Joe, sisters Marilyn Bachman and Delores Koster, and brother Raphael Bachman.
