"DEMENTED SON SHOOTS FATHER
A. J. RAYMOND MEETS TRAGIC DEATH AT HANDS OF ABNORMAL SON

One of the saddest casualties that has happened in the community, was the shooting of A. J. Raymond Saturday at the hands of his son, Josiah, who is generally conceded to be of unsound mind. The shot from the 22 caliber revolver entered the side of the head and death came shortly after.

According to the story of the two daughters, they were finishing the noon-day meal, when Josiah suddenly ordered the girls out of the room and when they had left they heard a shot. Upon entering again, their father was lying with his head on the table and the boy stood with the gun in his hand.

The daughter, Julia, remained in the house while the other, Bertha, went to their neighbor, J.C. Olson, for help. Dr. J.A. Snyder was called and he and Mr. Olson and L. J. Townswick went up to the house and took the gun from the boy. Sheriff Nebergall came shortly after and took young Raymond to Nevada where he was placed in the county jail.

Coronor Mills of McCallsburg, was called and came the same afternoon and an inquest was held. The jurors were Lloyd Ellingson, H.E. Lura and Jordan Sigmond, and their verdict read, "Andrew Raymond came to his death by a 22 caliber revolver shot in the temple, at the hand of Josiah Raymond, his son."

A hearing was held in Nevada Monday and the boy was taken to Anamosa yesterday and place in the ward for the criminally insane. He is 24 years old, and there was no question as to his mind being impaired.

Andrew Raymond was born at Lisbon, Ill., June 28, 1862, and passed away last Saturday, February 4, at the age of 65 years, 7 months and 7 days.

When he was three years old he came to Iowa with his parents in a covered wagon, and has lived in this community for over sixty years. On August 13, 1898, he was married to Ellen Johnson Hoversten, his wife passing away February 18, 1924.

He is survived by three children, Julia, Josiah and Bertha, and three sisters, Miss Julia Raymond of Des Moines, Mrs. Ellen Holm of Rembrandt, and Mrs. Annie Jorstad of St. James, Minn.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at Salem church, of which he was a member, Rev. Olaf Holen officiating, and the remains were laid to rest in the Roland cemetery."
