Louise Vanderpool was a truly good person. She cared about everyone. In her later years she still taught bible school and read to local school children. She very much enjoyed cooking and would enter the governors cookie and candy basket at the WV State Fair (and won!). She overcame great odds, starting her education in one-room schoolhouse, Byrd School, to become not only the first woman, but the first person, in her family with a college education that she worked very hard to achieve.

Lila Louise Litchfield Vanderpool, 82, of Renick, WV, passed away Thursday February 20, 2014 at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center.

She was born on June 26, 1931 in Southside, WV, she was a daughter of the late James Robert and Sara Catherine (Kate) Putney Litchfield.

Preceding Lila in death, besides her parents, are brothers, Edward A. (Buster), Charles Delbert and James Litchfield and half-sister, Mae Mayes.

Lila received her Bachelor's Degree from Morris Harvey College and a Masters from West Virginia University. She was a teacher at Point Harmony in West Virginia for several years and then was an exchange teacher in England for one year. She then returned and taught in West Virginia for just a short period before going to work for Laidlaw Brothers Textbook Publishing Company then Double Day Publishing Co. before retiring. She loved going to the Elementary Schools in the area to read to the children and teaching at the bible school at the Cavalry United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Selwyn Vanderpool; sisters-in-law, Ina Litchfield and Lorena Litchfield; and a very close friend, Denise Grim. Two nephews Robert and Tucker Litchfield and three nieces Donna Jean Sharp, Brenda Whittington, and Sara Edwards; six great nieces Lisa Sharp, Michelle McComas, Tina, Mary, Katie Litchfield, and Brittany Sammarco Adkins; one great nephew, Charley Litchfield one great-great niece Brittany Foley, and two great-great nephews Tyler Sharp.
