Eleanor A. Danko, 93, of Pond Hill passed away Friday evening, Feb. 21, 2014, in Berwick Retirement Village with her family by her side.
Born in Wapwallopen on Dec. 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Helen (Boyd) Burd. She attended school in Pond Hill, and worked on the family farm. She and her husband operated Danko's Meat Market, and she was employed at the former Country Cousins Shoe Factory, Mocanaqua, for 25 years. After retiring, she was a caregiver and did housecleaning for the elderly, until her health no longer allowed.
Eleanor was a member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ, Pond Hill. When she was younger, she enjoyed going dancing with her husband. In her later years, she found joy in watching shows that featured polka and ballroom dancing, and listening to the music, especially "The Lawrence Welk Show." She also liked shopping, knitting and ceramics.
She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Genevieve Karchner Vass, and her husband, Lawrence, Coopersburg; sons, Leonard Danko and his wife, Marie, Pond Hill; Edward Danko, Berwick; Dennis and his wife, Cathy, Pond Hill; 17 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a step-brother, Charles Hess, Pond Hill, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aloysius; son, Robert; and brothers, Edward, Luther, Eugene and Richard Burd.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at Heller Funeral Home, 633 E. Third St., Nescopeck, with her grandson, the Rev. Bryan G. Karchner, officiating. Interment will follow in Pond Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m., and Tuesday from 9 a.m. till the time of service.
