US government shipped his headstone to "Emison," his mother was still alive at the time.

Son of John and Matilda Murrell Slatten. He married Sarah Mallory, and this graveyard is on land once owned by her brother Greenberry. The Slattens probably rented some of this land. Note that brother William, who died in 1866, has a marker here, and this date is only 10 years after the parents of James arrived in KY.

One of six brothers who were in Union Regiments.

It appears that this couple was not in a position to financially support his mother Matilda after the death of brother Thomas J in 1870, according to Matilda's pension application. He did, however, try to find witness to support her claim.
