DEATH OF MR. E. STANTON,
There passed away last Tuesday at St. Helen's private hospital, a very old and respected Queenslander in Mr. Emanuel Stanton. He had been a resident of Queensland for 57 years, coming out in the ship Schackermaxer. Forty-one
years were spent in the Tingalpa district, where he was well known and respected. That could easily be seen by the large number of those who followed his remains to their resting place in the little Tingalpa Church of England cemetery. Even the State school children joined in the procession from the house to the church. The service in the church was read by the Rev. J. M. Teale (rector of the parish), and at the graveside by the Rev. H. T. Molesworth. For a number of years Mr. Stanton had been a member of the local government boards of Wynnum, Balmoral, and Belmont, being first elected in 1893, sometimes serving on two the same year, and many times the ruler of their deliberations, being chairman on six occasions in Balmoral, of whfch he was a member for 22 years. For years he was the warden of the church. He will be sadly missed. He was always ready, to do his share of work, and others, too, very often. He leaves a widow, 16 children, and 25 grand-children to mourn his loss. The coffin was a mass of beautiful white flowers, sent from loving friends from all parts.
Emmanuel Stanton and his parents arrived in Australia on the Schachmaxer in 1857, when he was five years old. In 1873 the Stanton family took up land in the Tingalpa district and began a dairy farm that supplied milk to the district until 1963. Emmanuel operated a butcher shop and later took over the family's land holdings. He was a member of the Kianawah and Bulimba Divisional Board and of both the Balmoral and Belmont Shire councils. He was Chairman of the Balmoral Divisional Board for four terms. The Stantons purchased other sections of land in the area for general farming, growing sugar and other crops. He and his wife, Mary, reared sixteen children. Stanton was an active member of Christ Church, which he helped to rebuild after it was blown down. He was buried there in 1914 after a sudden attack of peritonitis.
Emmanuel and Mary Stanton's daughter Ethel married James Porter in 1911, and after Emmanuel's death they took over running the property. Their second child, Stan Porter, grew up loving planes. As a boy he rode to Eagle Farm for a joyride with Kingsford Smith in the Southern Cross. At the age of thirty-two he took flying lessons and in 1947 he bought his own plane and made an airstrip on their land. In 1954 Stan Porter crashed into Bulimba Creek with his two sons on board, while they were scattering the ashes of Tom Kelly over the Kelly quarry. Stan and one of the boys, Keith, were killed, while Des was rescued from the tail of the plane. Tom Kelly was a neighbour, and my great grandmother's brother. Desmond Porter died in a plane crash 1 Oct 2012 when flying from Monto to Brisbane, in bad weather, the plane crashed at Imbil, Qld.
