He was born Aug. 20, 1920 in Wheeler, S.D. to Joseph and Mary Petty.
As a boy he lived on various farms in South Dakota. He was educated in rural schools in South Dakota. Lyle attended high school in Platte, S.D.
In 1933 the family started racing horses. Lyle made this his life's work till he retired from the race tracks in 1980. After this he went to work in feed lots and finally retired in Gordon, Neb. He and his wife Henrietta moved to Newcastle in 1989.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Henrietta; his parents; two brothers, Floyd and Sid.
Survivors include two sisters, Leigh Brakeman of Gordon, Neb. and Wilma Morse of Hammonton, N.J.; and two brothers, Darrell D. Petty of Newcastle and Donald A. Petty of Yucca Valley, Calif., stepson and wife, Max and Judy Dabney of Newcastle; step-daughter and husband, Beverly and Charles Cloe of Valdosta, Ga.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
