After the passing of her husband in 1963 she became an LPN at age 42. She found her niche at Wilson Hospital in the Nursery. Later she became a foster parent to a child that was not expected to survive, but because of her love and care the child grew up to have a life of her own. Nilva was a member of the Broome County Chapter of the Sweet Adelines and the First Ward Senior Chorus. She became a member of the Pennsylvania Foster Grandparents Program and was "Grandma" at Choconut Valley Elementary School for several years. She had sponsored two children through World Vision for over 15 years.
Nilva was predeceased by her husband, Morris Snitchler; and children, Carol, Jonathon, Marcia and Daniel Snitchler. Nilva is survived by her children, Shirley Johnson, Melvin (Marlene) Snitchler, David (Bridget) Snitchler, Paul (Karen) Snitchler, Wanda (Leroy) Hoffman, Rebecca (Kieth) Griffiths; and 22 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. at the New Life Ministries Church, 201 Hill Ave., Endicott, NY 13760. Her family will receive friends at church on Wednesday from 3-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider memorial contributions in Nilva's name to the New Life Ministries Church Food Pantry.
