HUDSON FALLS -- Gordon A. Hayes Jr., 87, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Saturday, April 14, 2012, with his loving family by his side.

Born Nov. 6, 1924, in Denver, Colo., he was the son of the late Gordon A. Hayes Sr. and Jennie (Rafferty) Bowen Hayes.

Gordon was a hard worker. He grew up on a dairy farm, working there for his father until his father retired and sold the farm. He attended Hudson Falls School, earning his GED in 1966. Gordon also worked as an ironworker and in other building construction. He established and operated his own company, Gordon Hayes Construction, until his retirement Nov. 30, 1987.

He was a cheerful person, who enjoyed making people laugh, especially by telling stories and poems. He was a great storyteller, and liked to play jokes and tricks on people. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Gordon married Patricia (Naatz) Chapin on Nov. 21, 1965, in Hudson Falls. They attended Kingsbury Wesleyan Church, which he helped to build.

In addition to his parents, Gordon was predeceased by his sisters, Edith Murray, Beatrice Hunter, Marion Smith, and Betty Hayes; his brothers, Merrill "Everett" Bowen, Glen Bowen, Bruce Bowen, Harold Hayes and James "Manley" Hayes; and his stepson, Brian Chapin.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hayes; his children, Linda Williams, Donna Cook and her husband, Ken, Gordon "Chip" Hayes III and his wife, Cheri, Wendy Hayes-Hoffay and her husband, Todd, and Diane Buser and her husband, Robert. Also included are his grandchildren, Jay, Tammy and David Williams, Meredith Morin and her husband, Christopher, Marleise and Jason Cook, Justin and Jacob Hayes, Tristan and Tara Hoffay, and Joshua, Ryan, Allison, and Zachary Buser; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Marjorie Stanton and her husband, Eldon; his first wife, Theresa (Rousseau) Henderson; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Friends may call upon the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Maynard D. Baker Funeral Home, 11 Lafayette St., Queensbury. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Loren Gage, pastor of Kingsbury Wesleyan Church, officiating.
