Mr. Bess proudly served 10 years in the Navy. He then worked in the communications division of the Department of Defense for 27 years, most recently in Jacksonville, Fla., until retiring to Island Grove, Fla., where he enjoyed spending time with his dogs and watching classic movies.

Hawthorne, FL – Daniel Lamar Bess, 73, of Island Grove, FL passed away February 2, 2014 at Select Specialty Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. A native of Belmont, NC, he was the son of the late James Anderson and Lula Cloninger Bess.
Mr. Bess proudly served 10 years in the Navy. He then worked in the communications division of the Department of Defense for 27 years, most recently in Jacksonville, FL, until retiring to Island Grove, FL, where he enjoyed spending time with his dogs and watching classic movies. He is survived by his life partner of 24 years, Scarlett Kinder of Island Grove, FL; daughter, Sherie Bess Pizzo (Ken) of Tampa, FL, son, Brian Bess (Jane Rice) of Evans, GA; sisters, Becke Bess Featherstone (Ned) of Charlotte, NC, Sue Bess Lahr (Stan) of Belmont, NC; 3 grandchildren, Collin, Corin, and Mollie Pizzo of Tampa, FL; 3 dogs, Maxx, Maggie, and Jack. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, James Edward Bess, Robert Lee Bess; and sister, Lutelle Bess Russell. A funeral service will be held 11am Saturday in the Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia, NC with Rev. Ron Watts officiating.
