Selma Girl Is Killed In Intersection Crash
The last day of 1939 yesterday brought death to Grace Althea Edgecomb of Selma who was killed when her automobile collided at 12:45 P.M. at Alta and Adams Avenues, five miles northeast of Reedley, with a car driven by John Eugene Conrad, 20, of Reedley.
Miss Edgecomb, a teacher in the Squaw Valley school, and a daughter of Charles Edgecomb, Selma district grammar school superintendent, died instantly of a broken neck. She was alone in her car.
Crash At Open Intersection
Highway Patrolmen S.L.Elder and George Tobin, Constable Fred Goodner of Reedley, and Deputy Sheriff William Snare said the cars crashed at an open intersection. Evidence at the scene indicated, the officers said, that Miss Edgecomb tried to stop but the rear brake on her car grabbed, resulting in the automobile swerving so that Conrad’s car hit it on the side.
Conrad told the officers he did not see the other car in time to stop. He was not held
Driver is Hurt.
Three others were hurt in the crash: Conrad who is in the Reedley Hospital with a broken collar bone, brain concussion and possible broken rib; his brother, Vernon, 13, who was treated by Dr. C.H.Traber for brain concussion and bruises, and their father, W.A.Conrad, 47, who suffered minor injuries.
Miss Edgecomb was a sister of Mrs. Goldie Dockery, a teacher in the Washington School in Reedley, and Mrs. Dan Sharp of Sacramento.
Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church in Selma at 2:30 o’clock Wednesday afternoon by Rev. P.H.Hayley. Burial will be in the Selma Cemetery with the Byrne Parlors in Charge.
