PECULIAR DEATH OF A SOUTHEND BUTCHER
On Monday, John Death, of Louise Villas, Chase Road, Southchurch was found dead in a barn used as a slaughterhouse at Smalldenes Farm, Prittlewell. Deceased was employed by Mr Dansy Drew, butcher, of London Road, and on Monday morning he went to the slaughterhouse to kill cattle. He was followed by his assistant, a man named Gillingham, and when the latter arrived he found Death lying on his back on the floor of the barn, quite dead. A yard or so away from the body was the deceased's hat and coat, and it was evident that in attempting to hang them up by standing on a sack of chaff he fell backwards and struck his head on the cement floor. At the inquest on Thursday, before Mr C E Lewis, a verdict was returned to this effect. A vote of condolence was passed with the family of the deceased.
