Alben, better known to family and friends as Albie, was the son of John L. Kouns and Dora McNeal of Ashland Kentucky. He was one of the youngest of 13 children, 11 of which survived to adulthood. During his childhood he loved to swim, and he attended Ashland High School as a teenager. He married Lena Karnap in 1942 and then participated in WWII with three of his brothers. After the war he came home and grew a family of three children leading to many grandchildren and great grandchildren who he greatly influenced. People remember the twinkle in his eye, his sense of humor, his ability to find a friend at every turn, and his strong desire to maintain a close family bond between all his children and grandchildren.
