Although born in "Indiana Territory" - later to become "Michigan Territory" in 1805, Leo settled in Frenchtown, Monroe County, Michigan by 1850 (where he can be found in the census records then).

He was a farmer, who married Margaret Solo on 24 February 1824 in Detroit, Michigan. They must have moved to Frenchtown (the River Raisin area) soon after because their first child, Joseph, was born there on 21 November 1824.
