Riley Stone QUILLEN was born July 16, 1845, in Taylor Township, Greene County, Indiana; died April 23, 1908, at Terre Haute, aged sixty-two years, nine months and seven days.

He was married to Elmira HOUSTON March 21, 1867, and to which union were born seven children—three sons and four daughters, two of whom, a son and daughter, having preceded their father to the grave.

Brother Riley united with the Church of Christ in August 1865, and was baptized by Elder James BLAKENSHIP.

In early childhood he became a cripple. He was raised on a farm and engaged in farming for a number of years. He taught several terms of school. When his brother, Nelson, was elected sheriff of Greene County in 1884 he moved to Bloomfield and served as deputy under his brother. On the death of his brother, after settling up his office work, he moved to Dugger, Indiana, at which place he resided till the close of his earthly life.

During Harrison’s administration he was appointed postmaster at Dugger. Again under McKinley’s administration he received the same appointment, and served as such until his death—in all about thirteen years.

Brother Riley was a model man, and his life was an open chapter. He was respected by all who knew him. He was a strong and firm temperance man, but it is as a Christian that we love to think of him. Brother Riley was a very devoted man and a great singer—He loved to sing. His wife tells me that the night before he took so bad before he retired he sang a great many songs and spoke of them as being so nice. He will be sadly missed in the singing at Dugger.

Riley was an honored citizen, a good neighbor, a kind husband and loving father. He leaves a wife and five children, Mrs. James SCHOFIELD, Mrs. Wellman AZBELL, Mrs. Otis MYERS, and Dow QUILLEN, of Dugger, and Dugger QUILLEN, of Arkansas; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen JEFFERS and Mrs. Margaret BOGARD, of Washington Township, Greene County, as well as a host of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. But we sorrow not at those who have no hope, for in Jesus we trust. The funeral services were held from the family residence Tuesday, April 28, at 9:00 o’clock, conducted by Elder W. B. TAYLOR. The remains were then viewed by those present and afterward laid to reset in the beautiful Dugger cemetery.
