Robert Dunham was born on Sept 3, 1744 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the son of Ann and Amos. He married Ruth Hatch in 1767 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. They had eight children in 22 years. He enlisted as a private in the Continental Army in 1777, served for 3 years in Capt. Benjamin Warren's company, in the Massachusetts regiment commanded by Gov. Alden (and after Alden's death by Gov. Brooks), and was honorably discharged at West Point on Mar 24, 1780. In civilian life he was a cooper, but old age and palsy eventually left him unable to work and impoverished. He had to move in with his son Robert, Jr.'s family and requested a military pension to support him, which he received. He died on July 18, 1824 in his hometown at age 79 and was buried there.
