Herbert Theiner alias Thiner: 1883 - 1961
Herbert was the seventh and youngest child born to Joseph Theiner and Anna Maria Kempter. He was born on a rented farm in Wheeling Township, Cook County, Illinois, and was baptized in the nearby Catholic church of St. Mary's in Buffalo Grove, Lake County, Illinois. His grandparents, Jacob Kempter and Margaretha Dornacher also lived in Wheeling, Illinois at this time. At the age of one year, his parents pulled up stakes in Illinois and moved west to Raymondville, Missouri where they were able to purchased their own farm. Herbert's formative years were spent on this farm. They lived there about twelve years from 1884 to the year 1896 when his father passed away. His older brother, Jake stayed on to run the farm in Missouri while the rest of the family moved back east to Indiana where his older sister, Catherine Buscher, was living with her new family. Around 1901 the Geis, Theiner & Buscher families all moved west to Webster County, Iowa. He stayed on in Indiana and married the twenty-two year old Mayme Thornbrough on January 17, 1906 at Earl Park, Indiana. She was the daughter of Preston Thornbrough and Lizzie Wall of Monroe, Adams County, Indiana. After their marriage, he and his new bride also moved to Webster County, Iowa to be closer to his family in the Fort Dodge area. While living in Iowa, Herbert decided to anglicize the family name to "Thiner". Over the next fourteen years, he farmed various rented farms in Webster County before finally moving to his own farm in Alba Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. He farmed here for the next twenty-one years before retiring in 1941. Herbert and Mayme had twelve children together, six boys and six girls. They enjoyed their retirement years in the neighboring town of Brewster, Minnesota. This is where Herbert died at the age of 77 years. He was buried in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Brewster, Nobles County, Minnesota. Eight years later, his beloved wife, Mayme, was interred next to him.
