excerpts: as early as 9 years of age he worked in a store as a clerk in Belleville. As a young man he suffered from a severe disease that left him with permanently rigid muscles in his neck. He attended the Union Academy. He graduated from Union College in 1845. He taught in various places before being called to take charge of the Union Academy in 1851 and he was there for the next 13 years. From there he organized the Hungerford Collegiate Institute, then he managed Oneida Seminary, then to manage a public school. Member of the Presbyterian Church since age 9
