One of God's chosen, John Porter (Lavon Peterson Porter), was called home at the age of 87 on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. John was born to Albert and Mary Peterson Porter on October 2, 1926 in Preston, Idaho. He was the youngest of 11 children and was raised on the family farm in "Egypt" west of Preston. He graduated from Preston High School and attended Utah State University where he played football. He then served in the Army during the occupation of Japan in World War II. He married his high school sweetheart, Clarice Condie, in the Salt Lake Temple in September, 1947. After graduation from USU they moved to Clifton, Idaho where they raised their 5 children. In 1980 they moved to Providence, Utah, made many friends and enjoyed their retirement years.
A devoted member of the LDS church. John and Clarice served an LDS Mission to London, England. He served in the baptistery at the Logan Temple for 22 years.
In his younger years, John was known throughout the Valley as a great softball pitcher. He was always known for his sense of humor, a kind nature and he never raised his voice in anger. His children were proud to call him "Dad".
He is survived by his wife and children: Janet (De) Henderson, Las Vegas, NV; Louise (Kent) Stanton, Fruit Heights; Jill (Bill) Baker, Providence; Kent (Lorrie) Porter, Springfield, MO; Julie Porter, Las Vegas, NV; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; a sister, Fern (Porter) Larsen and 2 sisters-in-law, Fern Porter and Mildred Porter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 7 brothers, Charles, Howard, Ralph, Sewell, Newell, Preston, Blaine; 2 Sisters, Klea and Laura and one grandchild, John Howard Henderson.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Sunshine Home Health for the loving care they gave John. Also, the family would like to thank Home Teachers, Wally Smith and Bill Bagley for their constant concern and love.
Graveside Services and interment will be in the Preston, Idaho Cemetery on Friday, January 24, at 1:00 p.m. That evening friends and family are invited to gather at the Foxridge Ward LDS Church, 155 North 100 East, Providence, Utah from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. for an informal open house in celebration of John's life.
