Alvena Austin - of Birmingham passed away. She retired from the Birmingham Board of Education after 29 years of service. A faithful member of First Baptist Powderly where she dedicated over 70 years as the pianist. First person to receive a degree in elementary education from Miles College. She later earned a Masters degree in education from UAB. Children: Paul Austin, Jr., Jacqueline Austin, Calvin Austin(Betty), Sharon Austin, Dennis Austin(deceased) Grandchildren: Monica Hatcher (Ricky), Paul Austin, III, Robert Austin (Gwen), David Austin, Elizabeth Austin Great Grandchildren: Meghan, Brooke, and Ashley Hatcher, Erin and Lilly Austin. Funeral will be at First Baptist Church Powderly, Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00 am, 2801 Dawson Avenue SW, Rev.Otis McGuire officiating. Entombment at Elmwood Cemetery.
