Charles was the fifth of ten children born to John and Amelia (Speer) Vandeveer. He married Mary 'Polly' Galbreath in 1810 and they had eight children: Evaline, John A., William, Elizabeth, Aaron, Cynthia Ann, Absalom and Polly.
