John was the second of eight children born to Rev. Charles and Mary 'Polly' (Galbreath) Vandeveer. He married Harriett M. (Morse)in 1836 and they had eight children: Polly A., Adaline, Matilda Jane, Charles T., Emeline, Henrietta, Samuel and William Franklin.
