Verlin was the son of German and Nyanza Walker.
Verlin married Agnes Zebrook on July 23, 1938, in Bristol, Virginia.
Verlin enlisted March 24, 1944 in the U.S. Army during World War II with Co. G. 175th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded November 22, 1944 in Rhineland, Germany, receiving shrapnel in the neck and chin. He was discharged on November 30, 1945 with the rank of sergeant.
On May 9, 1978, Verlin was elected to be a member of the Raleigh County School Board. He was a former teacher and principal and had worked in the special training services. He had a total of forty years working with children in Raleigh and surrounding counties.
Verlin died at his home on August 25, 1978.
Verlin and Agnes had five children:
