She was born in December 1839 as Cornelia Groenewoud in the village of Maasdam, south of Rotterdam, in the southern part of the Dutch southwestern province Zuid-Holland, daughter of Matthijs Groenewoud and Annigje Mallegrom.

Cornelia Groenewoud married on 17 april 1864 in Puttershoek, Zuid-Holland at the age of 24 years to the one year older Leendert van Driel.

Leendert and Cornelia van Driel-Groenewoud had in Maasdam the following children:
* Christiana, 15 June 1865; died 10 January 1945 in Lansing, Illinois, USA;
* Annigje (Anna), 21 October 1866, died 13 July 1934 in Chicago, Illinois, USA, unmarried;
* Jan van Driel, died 9 November 1868, 0 years;
* Hillegonda, 27 October 1869;
* Stillborn daughter, 28 April 1871;
* Maria, 14 April 1872.

The family Van Driel emigrated in 1872 to the USA.

Daughter Christiana alias Christine married about 1889, very probably in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, to Jacob Hillegonds, who was also born in the Netherlands.

In June 1900 Cornelia (61 y, born in December 1839 in Holland), her husband Leonard Van Driel (62, December 1838, Holland, teamster) and their daughter Anegje (34, October 1866, Holland) lived at a rented home in Calumet Township, in the southern Ward 34 of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

Cornelia Van Dreel, born on 18 January 1840 [not correct] in Holland, daughter of Case Groennond and Annie Malegram, died on 19 May 1911 at the age of 71 years in Chicago, 310 W. 111th St., Cook County, Illinois. Her widower, retired laborer Laindert Van Driel, son of John Van Driel and Hilliege Havelaar, died on 16 May 1915 at the age of 76 years in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
