John was born in Berwickshire, Scotland. He was one of 5 sons born to George and Jane (Young) Anderson.

John's siblings are James born 22 Sep 1825, Darling (a boy) born 01 Apr 1830, William born 23 Feb 1834, George 02 Apr 1839.

After the death of their father in 1840**, in Duns, Scotland, the small family of seven, James' wife Margaret, and son George J. born in Scotland 28 Dec. 1851; left Scotland for Canada in 1852. Landing at Montreal, Canada, one of the brothers (Darling) purchased land 08 Nov 1852 and started farming near St. Louis DeGonzague, Beauharnois Co. Quebec Provience, Canada. Where they remained for 6 years. After which the four brothers and mother sold the farm to James and his wife Margaret (Cockburn) Anderson.

The four brothers and their mother moved to Halton County, in Upper Canada. They remained there for about two years, working as farm hands.

About 1860 John, his three brothers and their mother had moved to Huron County, Michigan. They started to farm the area, cutting the trees, stump removal, turning the soil and planting crops. John also had a saw mill. The land cost a total of .50 per acre.

John was drafted into the Union Army 10 Nov 1864 at the age of 28. He was assigned to Company "D", 15th Michigan Vol., Inf. John was discharged at Little Rock Arkansas on 13 Aug 1865.

John and William Carty met on the battlefield during the Civil War. William told John that his sister was ugly and had one eye. She was no such thing, on her trip over from Ireland she was voted the best looking woman on the ship.

John married Ann Carty on 26 Dec 1870. Ann is the sister of William Carty. John and Ann knew each other about one month before they married.

This marriage produced seven children named as follows: Margaret Amela, Jane Young, Elizabeth Carty, George Alexander, William Mina May, Charles William, and John Calvin; Anderson's all.

Ann passed away 15 Jun 1888.

John passed away 06 Feb 1909.
