Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 4th New Jersey Militia on April 25, 1861, and mustered in as a Corporal in Company H on April 27, 1861. The 4th New Jersey Militia was a three-month enlistment unit raised in the days after the bombardment of Fort Sumter to meet the immediate threat of the Confederate secession. It arrived in the defenses of Washington, DC in May 1861, where it served until the First Bull Run Campaign. During that campaign the regiment was held in reserve, and saw no action. Private Berryman was then honorably mustered out on July 31, 1861 when his enlistment expired. He then joined the 6th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, enrollng on August 9, 1861, and being mustered in as a Private in Company D on August 26, 1861. He was found to have deserted on August 24, 1862, but returned to duty on April 6, 1863. On September 1, 1863 he was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps, and served in the VRC until he was transferred back to Company D, 6th New Jersey on March 11, 1864. He then served until the expiration of his enlistment, and he was honorably mustered out on September 7, 1864.
