MAN THRICE HIT BY MOTOR CAR BADLY MANGLED

Joe M. Gilbert
, aged 58 years, blind in one eye and partly deaf, was instantly killed Sunday night by a Frisco motor car at about 7:30 o'clock when he walked in front of the motor car at a curve in the road at a point about one-half mile east of the Frisco depot. This was the third time Gilbert had been struck by a motor car on the Frisco and on a previous occasion it was necessary for the motorman to stop the car to keep from killing him.

Circumstances surrounding the accident strongly indicate Gilbert chose the means for his end. As a result of his contact with the motor car the left side of Gilbert's face was torn off, one arm was broken and the other nearly severed and one leg was broken. F. E. Zentner, of Joplin, was engineer on the motor car and he stopped the car within a few feet but by the time the crew returned to the scene of the killing, Gilbert was dead.

On one previous occasion, about a month ago and within a short distance of where he finally met death, Gilbert suffered a fracture of three ribs and other minor injuries from contact with the motor car.

Gilbert had been a resident of Shaw hill, in the northeast part of Galena, a number of years. Immediate surviving relatives are a sister, Mrs. George Hansbrough, of Galena; a son and two daughters, living in Joplin.

Funeral services were conducted from the Clark chapel Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Lou Love and burial was in Galena cemetery.

Notes:

Oddie was born in Galena on April 17, 1910. Oddie Gilbert married Lee B Carpenter on October 27, 1931 in Joplin. On November 30, 1932, Oddie C Gilbert married Charles M Cochran, who died in 1941. Her next marriage was to Charles David Franklin Dalton but the date is unknown at this time. He died in 1967. On November 19, 1968, Oddie Dalton married John Millark. She died in 1990.
