Charles was in school.
After that, he is not with his family in 1875. In 1880 he is boarding with his sister Mary McCartney and her husband Daniel and their family in Lowell, Cherokee County, Kansas, where he is working as a miner. His birth is given in Indiana, about 1854.
Charles seemed to make the rounds with his sisters, as in 1885, in Lowell, he is with the family of his sister Elizabeth Hussong, her husband George and their children, still working as a miner, his birth in Indiana, and he is listed as age 38.
He last appears in the household of his sister, "Oat" White and her husband, Perry, living in Galena, Kansas, where his birth was given as April 1852 in Illinois. He was working as a lead and zinc miner.
