Our Pioneer Heritage, Vol. 13, p. 349 - Edmund McLatchie, son of Samuel Russell McLatchie and Eliza Merritt, was born October 23, 1842, at Maize, County Down, Ireland. At that time, and for some years previous, his father had been a traveling missionary for the L.D.S. Church so Edmund was born in the Church and was blessed when a babe of two months by Elder Andrew Hendrie. When he was about five years old his mother died of smallpox, leaving him and his father alone.
Edmund's schooling up to this time amounted to very little—about three months in all—but his desire for an education was early made manifest and he soon learned to read and write. Fortunately he had access to a library, at a cost of a few pennies a week, where he could read and study every evening. After he came to Utah he kept on studying and became well versed in the higher branches of education such as Latin, French, astronomy, dramatic art and music, the latter being his special field.
Edmund, with his father, stepmother and others of their family finally emigrated to Utah. The young emigrant obtained employment cutting stone for the building of the Temple, and was paid partly in tithing and partly in cash from Brigham Young's office. In 1864, he went as a pioneer to Beaver, then to Kanosh. He remained in Kanosh for twenty years, and was active in most organizations of the Church. He was ward superintendent of Sunday School for sixteen years, counsellor in M.I.A., acted as leader in drama, and was ward chorister the twenty years he lived there.
The pioneer urge being strong within him, Edmund moved from Kanosh to Star Valley, Wyoming in about 1884. Here he married Rebecca J. Murphy, acquired a good farm and was successful in raising fruits and vegetables. When the Star Valley Stake was organized in 1892 he was chosen as stake superintendent of Sunday School a position he held for nine years.
In 1913 the McLatchies moved to Kaysville, Utah. Edmund was now 71 years of age and found it difficult to adjust himself to new surroundings and new friends, and was too advanced in years to take an active part in community life. But until his death he remained interested in the times and events of the world, both politically and religiously. He died Feb. 4, 1926, at the age of 83. A promise was given him in one of his Patriarchal blessings that he would never taste death, and that promise was fulfilled, for he died very suddenly, apparently never knowing pain. — Maud McLatchie Odd
