The Index (Hermitage, Missouri) 31 Mar 1898
Uncle Jack Pitts passed over the silent river Monday night the 28th inst. He was an old and valuable citizen and his loss is a severe one to the community and an irreparable sad one to the stricken family. He had, long since, passed man's allowed time, three score years and ten, being way up in eighty. Death is tragic at any age, but we naturally expect it when the extreme age of this good old man has been reached, and, consequently, feel more resigned to it then we do when the victim is in the early stages of manhood or or womanhood. Let us, with revered hands, lay the tribute on his tomb that he was a great man. The death of Uncle Jack Pitts strongly contrasts with that of Mrs. Charley Paxton who died last week, she being in the early stage of womanhood, leaving a sweet babe and a young husband to mourn, with innumerable other friends, her untimely taken away.
