Charles Otto, who for the past fifteen years has been employed at the wholesale liquor house of Peter Fries, suicided at his home in Rock Island yesterday by shooting himself. The weapon used was a 38-calibre revolver, and the bullet entered the head just back of the right ear. Death was almost instantaneous. Otto's family relations are said to have been happy, and the only motive assigned for his suicidal act is a strange one. He had received a summons last week to serve on the jury, an experience he seemingly never had. He did not wish to serve, and worried about it a great deal. Some of his acquaintances, it is said, becoming cognizant of his perplexity, by chaffing him about his forthcoming service as a juror, instead of informing him that he was entitled to exemption on account of age, added to his worry. Otto talked about the matter a great deal on Sunday. He retired at the usual time on Sunday evening, 9 o'clock. He arose at 6:30 o'clock on Monday morning, and after starting the fire in the kitchen stove called his wife, and told her to prepare a breakfast. He then went to a room in the front part of the house, and while Mrs. Otto and her daughter were engaged in the kitchen they heard a pistol shot in the front room. A neighbor was at once summoned and when the room was entered Otto was found lying dead on the floor. Otto was sixty years of age and for nearly thirty years past had resided in Rock Island. His family consists of a wife and two daughters, the deceased was a member of the Ancient Order of United Druids and also carried a policy in a life insurance company. His funeral took place this afternoon.
