Maurice was the eldest son in a family of six boys and five girls. He spent his early years in Kansas where he attended high school and junior college. On September 24, 1936, he was married to Tessie Beatrice Copeland.
Maurice worked many years as a Railway Postal Clerk, then in 1957 he moved his family to Franklin County, Washington. There, he built a prosperous, diversified farm from sagebrush. He served as first president of the Basin City Farmers Organization.
Tessie Bea and Maurice raised a family of seven children: Patricia, Maurice Wayne, Jr., Phyllis, Barbara, Frank George, Laurence, and Shirley. Frank was killed in 1967, during the Vietnam War, while serving in the US Navy.
