She was born in December 1851 as Baukje Stellingwerf in the country village Tzummarum, in the utter northwestern part of the Dutch northern province Friesland, close to the Waddenzee and the North Sea, daughter of the 38 years aged cabbage grower (kooltjer) Jelte Sybes Stellingwerf and Grietje Douwes Douma.

Baukje Jeltes Stellingwerf married on 23 January 1873 in Menaldum, the seat of municipality Menaldumadeel at the age of 21 years to the four years older Rinze Dirks Tilstra, born in the village of Schingen, municipality Menaldum.

Baukje and Rinze Tilstra had in Schingen, municipality Menaldumadeel, province Friesland, the following children:
* Dirk, 3 January 1874;
* Grietje, 16 May 1875;
* Jelte, 22 September 1876
* Klaas, 28 December 1877;
* Sybe, 5 January 1879;
* Antje, 13 March 1880;
* Douwe, 26 December 1881;
* Jeltje, 31 May 1883;
* Jantje, 11 September 1884.

The family Tilstra emigrated in 1887 to the USA.

Their sons Dirk (Dick) and Douwe (David) died in 1904 and 1912 at the age of about 29 and 30 years, both very probably in or near the Dutch truck farmers settlement South Holland, just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

In 1910 Bessie (58 y, born in the Netherlands), her husband Renza Tilstra (62, Netherlands), their children Nicholas (32, Netherlands), Samuel (31, Netherlands), David (28, Netherlands), Annie (30, Netherlands), Ella (26, Netherlands) and Jennie (25, Netherland) lived in Thornton [Township, very probably in or near South Holland too, Cook County, Illinois. According to the records of this Census 1910 the family Tilstra immigrated in 1887.

R. Tilstra was one of the early gardeners of South Holland. Many of these gardeners made an all day trip to the South Water Street market in Chicago to sell their crops. There exists a very nice photo of Mr. R. Tilstra sitting on his fully by vegetables loaded, by a horse drawn wagon.

Her husband and farmer Renze Tilstra died in March 1916 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 68 years. Widow Bouke Tilstra died in May 1928 at the age of 76 years in South Holland too.
