Alberta Pioneer Dies At 87
A pioneer Alberta farmer who, in 1902, trekked by horse and wagon from Utah to a point now known as Frankburgh in the High River district, John Carter Robbins, 87, died in the General Hospital on Thursday.
Mr. Robbins was born in Provo City, Utah, August 29, 1869, and was married to Ellen Frank of Goshen, Utah, in the Salt Lake Temple, April 23, 1902.
Three days later, he and other pioneers began the long drive to Canada. On the site of his original homestead, Mr. Robbins farmed near High River through the years until he came to Calgary in 1929.
"J.C.", as Mr. Robbins was known to his close friends, lived a very active retirement. He was particularly interested in angling and bowling.
Mr. Robbins was predeceased by his wife in 1934, and is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jake (Vera) Curliss, Mrs. William (Donna) Grogan of Calgary, and Mrs. Borden (Rhoda) Burke of Vancouver and two sons, Bert R. Robbins of Calgary and Ray F. Robbins of Salt Lake City. There are two grandsons and three granddaughters.
