He married Katherina Schwendemann, daughter of Landolin Schwendemann and Sophia Althauser, in Germany.
His death was caused by an unidentified illness contracted while in military service in the Civil War.
The 191st Regiment Infantry, in which he served as a private, was organized at Camp Chase, Ohio, in January and February of 1865, moving to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, on March 10, 1865. It was attached to the Second Brigade, First Provisional Division, Army of the Shenandoah, on March 20, participating in the march to Charleston on March 21 and transferring to Second Ohio Brigade, Second Provisional Division, March 27. Duty near Charleston until April 4. Operations in the Shenandoah Valley in the vicinity of Winchester, Stevenson's Depot and Jordan's Springs, April to August. The unit was mustered out August 27 and discharged September 5, 1865. The regiment lost during service 29 enlisted men by disease.
The cemetery is in the northwest quarter of Section 26, on the west side of the Tipp-Cowlesville Road (aka County Road 153) at the south edge of Tipp City limits. A local Boy Scout troop has undertaken the project of picking up the fragments of gravestones and mounting them into a wall at the front of the wooded area which was the cemetery.
