FROSTBURG - Gertrude V. "Gertie" Brode, 82, of Frostburg, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born Jan. 3, 1918, in Clarysville, she was the daughter of the late James and Helen (Lavin) Smith. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Hilary Brode Sr.; one sister, Katherine Hardy; and three brothers, James D. Smith, Herbert Smith and Paul Smith. Mrs. Brode was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church. She had done extensive volunteer work at Frostburg Village Nursing Home and St. Michael's Catholic Church. She loved bowling. Surviving are one son, Hilary Brode Jr. and wife Angela, Alexandria, Va.; three sisters, Elsie LaRue, Frostburg, Eleanor Murphy and husband Bill, Woodbridge, Va., and Helen Long, Salisbury, Md.; a special sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Smith, Cumberland; and a sister-in-law, Jean Smith, Mount Savage. Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, Frostburg. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Tuesday, Feb. 15 with the Rev. Father William E.
