Caroline Hunt was the daughter of Thomas Hunt and Elizabeth Brown. She was born in South Rauceby in about 1822. Caroline and her future husband Daniel West were passengers on the Martha Ridgway, which arrived at Port Nicholson on 14 November 1840. Caroline was described in the passenger list as a 19 year old sempstress. Caroline and Daniel were married on 22 March 1842 and soon after moved to the Chatham Islands where they lived for about 15 years, returning to the Wellington area in 1857 and settling in the Hutt Valley.
