Immigrated 14 NOV 1840 on the "Martha Ridgeway", embarked at Gravesend on July 5th. 1840, at age 23, as an Agricultural Labourer to Wellington, New Zealand. There he was a gardener in Thurndon Flat, Wellington. In 1842 moved to Pitt Island, Chatham Islands, NZ. Captain Hugh Clark arrived on the Brig "HELEN" to ship cargo (potatoes, oats and wheat) for Mr. Hunt when the hurricaine arose. After the shipwreck Mr Hunt and his two sons saved the three survivors, who were James Dixon, Henry Twoomey and an unnamed Kanaka lad who were clinging to the cliff rocks and took them to his house. They were treated kindly, and returned later to Lyttleton, NZ on board the 'ESTHER' with Capt Blair. They arrived back in Wellington, NZ on 14 AUG 1857. Mr Hunt picked up the bodies of the dead and decently interred them. Captain Hugh Clark, Annie Clark and First Mate John White, Seaman John Jenkins, Fredrick Hockart, Benjamin Dawson, William Park, and John Merray were all buried close to the cliffs on Pebbly Beach of Waihere Bay overlooking the scene of the tragedy. The body Of Jean Clark was never found.
