FRONTENAC - Pete Balma, 82, of Frontenac died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at Hospital District No. 1 in Girard. He was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Frontenac to Bert and Fran (Largio) Balma. He was a 1941 graduate of Frontenac High School. He worked for Red River Lumber Co. in California after he graduated high school. In 1942 he returned to the area and worked for Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons. He then worked for Frisco Railroad from 1945 to 1946. In 1951 he worked on construction sites in several states as a pipe fitter. He retired in 1959 because of an industrial accident in Wilmington, Del. He was on the Frontenac City Council for 24 years. During that time he helped accomplish many improvements to the city, such as the industrial park and its water tower, the water treatment plant, sewer improvements and many improvements to city streets. He also helped in the addition of police and fire departments. During the late 1960s he was the Frontenac city marshal. He was also a member of Frontenac volunteer fire department; he took care of fire truck maintenance and drove it on calls. He was a member of Pipe-fitters Local No. 74 in Wilmington, Del. Survivors include a brother, Domenic Balma of Chicago. He was preceded in death by a baby sister, Mary Joann Balma. The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Friskel Funeral Home in Frontenac with the Rev. Robert McElwee officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Frontenac. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials to Frontenac Helping Hand Indigent Fund or to Sacred Heart Catholic Building Fund may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, 230 E. McKay, Frontenac, 66763.
