Laura Condon was one determined person. As a young girl, she lost her parents and was raised by a grandmother. While a little girl, she was hospitalized at the Sioux San Hospital with tuberculosis for quite some time and lost one of her lungs.

After her marriage she raised 10 children. When her husband, Silas, died, she moved to Dupree, or "to town" as she called it. She became involved with the Mary Martha Guild, the Dupree Manor and Elderly Nutrition Services.

She worked on the Green Thumb program as a homemaker aide for the Dupree Manor. She was known to be a homemaker, loved to dance and joke around.

If someone came to visit she would always have her bean soup and kah bobo bread ready. You would see her at the nearest pow wow scene dancing up a storm, cane in hand. She wouldn't let anything stop her from doing what she wanted or needed to do.

She doted on all her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, always calling them by name in Lakota. She loved to visit and travel with them.

In November of 2001 she moved to the Eagle Butte Manor, where she was living until her health condition turned and she had a stroke. She was admitted to the Rapid City Rehab Center and eventually moved to the Beverly Healthcare Center in Rapid City. She was there six months and then transferred to the Beverly Healthcare Center in Mobridge, where she died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the age of 85.

Laura was born Dec. 23, 1918, to Eugene and Anna (Afraid of Hawk) Between Lodge at Red Shirt Table in Pine Ridge. She was one of their five children. Later, she and her sister Esther were raised by their grandmother.

In the early 1950s, Laura married Silas Condon and to this union Geno, twins Darrell and Merrill, Bernadine and Jeanette were born. They made their home in Cherry Creek along with her other five children until moving to Dupree.

Laura is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Melvin (Madeline) LeClaire of Rapid City, Jeanette Condon of San Francisco, Calif., and Bernadine Condon of Eagle Butte; sons, Cyrus Condon, Geno, Darrell, and Merrill, all of Eagle Butte, and Reggie Kills A Hundred of Indianapolis, Ind.; 43 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, three stepchildren, Pearl Hollow Horn of Red Scaffold, Rita (Condon) Woolard of San Jose, Calif., and Chester Condon of Eagle Butte; sister-in-law, Ellen (Condon) In The Woods of Dupree; cousins, Dora Bruguier of Eagle Butte and Daniel Afraid Of Hawk of Cherry Creek and all the Condon, Between Lodge and In The Woods families.
