Charlie was one of the ten children of Charles and Mary Pocan. He was born in the U.P. of Michigan at a lumber camp where his father worked. In 1918 his entire family traveled to Oregon in a Franklin automobile. Charlie worked as a "Fireman" stoking the boiler of steam railroad engines. He first worked on logging engines at timber camps in Oregon. He was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad when he was tragically killed, at age 49, on his intended retirement property in Pollock Pines, California. Charlie married Tillie Grimm in 1923 in San Francisco. They had no children, but doted on many nieces and nephews. Charlie enjoyed playing the mandolin and crooning his favorite tunes into a recording record player he purchased in the 1940s. His funeral procession included over 100 automobiles traveling from downtown Hayward, California, to his final resting place at Lone Tree Cemetery.
