According to the probated will of her maternal grandfather, George W McGlothlin, Elena and her brother, Erwin Strait, inherited 65 acres of his farm in the Ravenswood District of Jackson County, WV. After her brother died in 1882, Elena inherited his share of the farm. After marriage, she and General Lee farmed the land until about 1901 when they sold the farm, moved to Parkersburg, WV, raised their children, and remained the remainder of their lives except for a brief interval spent in Huntington, WV.
