Bess "Bessie" Ehrlich Blumenfeld was born on July 12, 1909 in the Bronx, New York to Bennie Ehrlich and Esther Cynowiec Ehrlich, both Russian speakers from Poland. She had two brothers.

Bess married Rueben Esra Blumenfeld on June 24, 1934 in Putnam County, Florida, and they became the parents of Bette Jo Blumenfeld Krapf and Allen T. Blumenfeld. By 1940 the family were living in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia at 231 East 51st Street. Bess' son-in-law was William Meyer Krapf. Their religion was Jewish.

For many years Bess was a beloved third-grade teacher at Charles Holmes Herty School (formerly Moore Avenue School) in Savannah. Students in her class fondly remember eating unleavened bread in her classroom to commemorate Passover.

Student (1956-57) Sharlotte Neely Donnelly remembers reading in her class If I Were Going by Mabel O'Donnell. Sharlotte credits that book and Ms. Blumenfeld's discussion of it as one of the reasons she grew up to be an anthropologist.

Bess passed away on September 11, 1963 in Savannah and is buried next to her beloved husband Reuben, whom she predeceased, in Savannah's Bonaventure Cemetery. I hope someone will add her photo to this site.
