Birchdale Past& Present-article by Margaret Wheelock Bilyeu:  David Bilyeu and Jemima Workman were married in the 1870s and lived near Blue Mound, IL. David was a descendant of Pierre Billiou, a French Huguenot who moved from France to Holland to escape persecution.  He  later emigrated to New Amsterdam in north America and settled on Staten Island.

David & Jemima had 10 children before they left Blue Mound: Henry, 2 who died in infancy, Abner, Anderson, Roseann, Josiah, Diane, Cora, and Alice.  In 1894, they took their family in a covered wagon to the Indian Territory.  David rode horseback to claim land that was opened for homesteading.  Their son Raymond was born near Newkirk, OK.  The family moved back to Illinois in 1897 where their youngest child Pearl was born.  In 1904 David moved his family to Iowa where they lived on various rental farms.

In 1913, David with his son Raymond and Granville Blake went in a boxcar with 6 head of cattle and 10 horses to Stratton, Ontario. They crossed the Rainy River and found a place to live in Frontier, MN. That fall, David took a homestead on the Wing River.  Their income was from forest products.  Timber was cut and floated down the river to lumber mills in Baudette & Spooner, MN and in Rainy River, Ontario.  The last big log drive on the Rainy River was in 1927.

David remained in northern Minnesota until his death and was buried in the Birchdale Cemetery.
