Donnie J (Jack) Barrow, 87, of Amarillo died Monday, December 23, 2013 in Amarillo at The Thomas E. Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 PM Friday, December 27, 2013 at Llano East Cemetery, Field of Valor with Gil Hiltbrunner of Jeremiah 33:3 Ministries officiating. Military honors will be by the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #26. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home Osage Chapel, 2800 S. Osage St.
Donnie J (Jack) Barrow, an old soldier, moved on to his eternal home on December 23, 2013. Mr. Barrow lived at the Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home since June 2013.
He was born July 10, 1926 in Dill City, Ok, to Roy and Drucilla Barrow, the youngest of 7 children, Jack spent his younger years living and farming, sometimes entirely on his own, in order to help the family. He earned money by driving a school bus early in the morning before attending school himself.
Horses were his pastime. He enjoyed rodeo, branding and polo matches. He attended school through the 11th grade, leaving to join the Army. He served during WWII, with the 420d Calvary Recon that was instrumental in liberating Austria and saving the famed Lipizzaner Stallions. He left the Army 6/17/1947 and immediately entered the Air Force on 6/18/1947. He spent the next 20 years serving his country with honor.
He married Frieda Eggleston of Elk City in Amarillo July 29, 1949. They spent 61 years together traveling across the country and abroad as Uncle Sam moved them every three years or so. 1967 he become a Mason through St John's #1 Lodge in New Hampshire, later being a part the Amarillo's Khiva Shrine Drum and Bugle Corp. He retired 5/31/1967 and began another journey in life, eventually settling back in Amarillo. He loved raising and racing horses, made his own two and four horse trailers and doing leather work making his own boots and saddles.
He was preceded in death by his beloved Frieda on September 9, 2010, His parents, 2 infant siblings, 2 brothers Ray and Bob, 2 sisters Ruth Colangelo and Jean Isley, Four grandchildren Wendi, Shane, Shelby and Chris Barrow.
He is survived by a son Richard (Rick) and wife Claudia of Ft Worth and daughter Donna Grove and husband Bill of Amarillo. Four grandchildren Casey Barrow, Tisha Scott, Cameron Rice and Jason Grove. Seven great grandchildren Jesse, Chandra and Kirsten Rice, Alexandra and Sophia Barrow, Branson and Christian Grove, Trelyn and Trendi Scott. A sister-in-law, Helen Barrow of Eagle Point, Oregon.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and staff of the Thomas E. Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Ussery Roan Texas Veterans Home for the loving care they extended to our beloved Jack.
