The son of Mordecai and Sarah Ann Broaddus served as Treasurer of Essex County and an officer in the Confederate Army. Foot Broaddus enlisted 21 May 1861 in Company F of the 55th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. He was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant 30 September 1861. On 14 March 1862, he resigned as Q.M. sergeant and became a private in Co. D then discharged himself from the army by furnishing a substitute (Henry Trimble). Two weeks later, on 1 April 1862, he rejoined the regiment, being appointed Captain Assistant Quartermaster and served as such until "dropped on account of not having given bond," on 11 December 1862. Later he served as a Private in Co. B, 9th Va. Cavalry. After the war, he supported the Conservatives against the Readjusters and was a successful local candidate.
